What Fabric Weight (GSM) Actually Means — And Why It Matters for Your Hoodie

If you've ever compared two hoodies that look almost identical but feel completely different in your hands, the answer usually comes down to one number: GSM.

What is GSM?

GSM stands for "grams per square metre" — it's the standard measurement used across the clothing industry to describe how much a fabric weighs. The higher the GSM, the denser and heavier the fabric.

It's a simple number, but it tells you a lot about how a garment will look, feel, and perform:

  • Lightweight (under 200 GSM): Thin, breathable, drapes softly. Good for warm weather or layering pieces.
  • Midweight (200–300 GSM): The most common range for everyday hoodies and sweatshirts — enough structure to hold its shape without feeling bulky.
  • Heavyweight (300 GSM and above): Dense, substantial, warm. Holds its shape well, resists pilling, and tends to last significantly longer with regular wear and washing.

Why heavier isn't just "warmer"

It's a common assumption that heavyweight fabric is only about warmth — but GSM affects far more than temperature:

  • Durability: Denser weaves resist pilling, stretching out of shape, and thinning after repeated washes.
  • Drape and structure: Heavier fabric holds its shape on the body rather than clinging or sagging, which is part of why oversized and boxy fits tend to use heavier cotton.
  • Perceived quality: It's one of the first things people notice when they pick up a garment — a heavier hoodie simply feels more substantial and considered.

How to choose the right weight for you

  • Everyday layering piece, worn under a jacket: Midweight is usually the sweet spot — enough structure without bulk.
  • Standalone piece for cooler months, or an oversized silhouette: Heavyweight cotton (300gsm+) holds shape better and reads as more premium.
  • Warm climate or gym/athletic use: Lightweight fabric will breathe better and won't trap heat.

Where Waran Wear fits in

At Waran Wear, our hoodies are built on heavyweight cotton specifically because we want pieces that hold their shape, resist wear, and feel substantial from the first wear to the hundredth. If you've been reaching for the same three hoodies in your wardrobe for years, GSM is usually the quiet reason why — and it's worth checking before your next purchase, whether it's from us or anywhere else.
